76) If I were to make a list of my Top 100 favorite songs, that list would definitely include “Lined Up” by Shriekback. So, to pay tribute to this funky tune, I’ve lined myself up with a pillar, a nice doubwide mailbox, and a couple of mailbox competitors. As you might be able to tell, you can find this line-up at Fisherman’s Terminal on W Nickerson Street.
U-District, University Way NE at Ravenna Blvd
75) This bus stop bench gave me a welcome opportunity to sit and ponder this decorative U-District mailbox and how it reflects the banality of human existence. But then I saw the bus coming and I got up so it wouldn’t stop for me. If you want to have yourself a good think, walk north along University Way NE until you get all the way up to Ravenna Blvd.
Capitol Hill, 15th Ave E at E Howell St
74) As you can see, I’m a little — oh, shall we say, distressed? — in this photo. Am I upset about all the graffiti on this Capitol Hill mailbox? No. Am I really, really sure that I’m not bothered by the graffiti? Yes, I’m sure. You see, what has me up in arms in that moments before this photo was snapped, I discovered that my wallet was not in my pocket and my brain was already starting to process just how big of a headache this was going to be for me. There was a happy ending, however, when I discovered my wallet was safe and sound at home. So don’t go to 15th Ave E at E Howell Street looking for it… it’s not there.
Wallingford, N 40th St at Sunnyside Ave N
73) Bike series (7/7) Our stunning bike series through Wallingford concludes with this box poised on N 40th Street at Sunnyside Ave N. As you can see, the box has a lovely view of downtown, which probably looks extra nice at night. Thanks for joining me on the cycling adventure! We’ll return to the regular random stuff tomorrow.
Wallingford, Wallingford Ave N gets us up to N 40th St
72) Bike series (6/7): Continuing north along Wallingford Ave N gets us up to N 40th Street, where we find this jovial mailbox sharing a sidewalk with the famous Durn Good Grocery. I really think this must be one of the happiest mailboxes in the area. How could it not be?
Wallingford, Wallingford Ave N at N 37th St
71) Bike series (5/7): Our journey now cuts back over to Wallingford Ave N at N 37th Street where we find this stoic servant sharing a strip of pavement with a bus stop. I have to admit, I arrived at this box a bit saddened, because a box that I had hoped to find a few blocks south was GONE. Madness… sheer madness…
Wallingford, Burke Ave N just north of N Northlake Way
70) Bike series (4/7): I found this classic box tucked away behind some shops in the Marine Square complex, right off of Burke Ave N just north of N Northlake Way. This box has a lot of little friends stationed next to him… I can only imagine the kinds of things they all talk about!
Wallingford, Stone Ave N at N 36th St
69) Bike series (3/7): Only a couple blocks south of the last mailbox we find this fine specimen standing ready for duty right outside a bank and across the street from a mini warehouse place. You can drop off your mail in the box, your paycheck at the bank, and your box of figurines at the warehouse, all with one convenient trip to Stone Ave N at N 36th Street!
Wallingford, Stone Ave N at N 38th St
68) Bike series (2/7): You’re probably thinking “Hey, what happened to the Wallingford bike series that just started yesterday?” Don’t worry, this is still a part of it, but for some reason I took off my vest and helmet so there really isn’t any trace of biking in this shot. If you visited this unassuming mailbox on Stone Ave N at N 38th Street, I have no doubt it would vouch for the existence of my bike.
Wallingford, Whitman Ave N and N 40th St
67) Biking Series (1/7): What a treat I have in store for you! Due to the smashing success of the nine-part running series I published a couple weeks ago, I’ve decided to give you a thrilling seven-part series that chronicles a bike ride through one of Seattle’s loveliest neighborhoods, Wallingford! The first stop on our journey is at this somewhat neglected box at the intersection of Whitman Ave N and N 40th Street. I guess the box itself isn’t in too bad of shape, but the surrounding growth certainly needs a bit of trimming! You wouldn’t want a rabid raccoon jumping out and mugging you when you’re trying to mail your power bill, would you?
