46) Running Series (3/9): By the time we got up to Phinney Ridge I felt the need to do a quick mid-run stretch. Well, I didn’t really have to stretch, but I wanted to do something to put a little variety in the photos. I hope you enjoy Phinney Ave N, because this box at N 55th Street is the first of four we’ll be visiting in a relatively short distance.
Wallingford, N 47th St at Interlake Ave N
44 & 45) Running Series (2/9): Down past the south end of the lake, past the ball fields, past the Kid Valley, is the post office for the 98103 zip code. During busier times, this fine snorkel box has a line of cars queued up behind it, but if you come early enough you can have it all to yourself! Pay it a visit on N 47th Street at Interlake Ave N if you’d like. BONUS! BONUS! If you look carefully, you can see another mailbox in the background, near the doors of the post office. I’m counting this as a special two-for-one, as though I had actually planned it.
Green Lake, Woodlawn Ave N at NE 72nd St
43) Do I ever have a special treat for you! I recently noticed that one of our regular running routes is absolutely loaded with mailboxes, so for the next nine days I am presenting an exciting themed series of photos that will thrill young and old alike. Here we go! Running Series (1/9): The journey begins with a stop by the mailbox outside the Little Red Hen on the north end of Green Lake. For the longest time, the Hen was touted as the only country music bar within Seattle, and as far as I know it may still be. I bet this particular mailbox has seen more than its share of 2:00 a.m. shenanigans. Maybe it even saw what you did that one night you were stumbling along Woodlawn Ave N at NE 72nd Street.
Lake Washington, Lakeside Ave S
42) This was an annoying photo to take. This mailbox is within spitting distance* of Lake Washington, but there wasn’t any convenient way for me to get the actual lake in the shot. Trust me, it’s there, off to the left. And it’s really big. If you were standing here on Lakeside Ave S you’d understand. (* Granted, you’d have to be a rather strong spitter.)
Roosevelt District, NE 65th St at Roosevelt Way NE
41) I really don’t think this Roosevelt District box is long for this world. It’s positioned outside a building that will almost certainly be coming down in the next couple years — it’s just down the block from a future Light Rail station, and single-story buildings like this have been coming down left and right for new apartments. Head over the NE 65th Street at Roosevelt Way NE if you want to see it before it leaves.
Georgetown, 6th Ave S and S Front St
40) What you’re looking at right here is a mailbox that does not get much — if any — love. Tucked away in Georgetown at the corner of 6th Ave S and S Front Street, it does not enjoy any sidewalks or convenient parking areas. It’s completely overshadowed by the full post office just a couple blocks north. Sad, sad indeed.
Ballard, W 54th St, just past 32nd Ave NW
39) This was an elusive Ballard mailbox… the information I had for it was a bit sketchy and I couldn’t see it on Google Street View. Turns out, it’s tucked away back in a courtyard between some apartment buildings, but fortunately it’s still publicly accessible. If you want to access it yourself, you’ll find it at the Golden Sunset Apartments on W 54th Street, just past 32nd Ave NW.
West Seattle, Alki Ave SW at 61st Ave SW
38) True Story: When I was setting up this West Seattle shot, all I was really trying to do was make sure the water was showing. It wasn’t until just now that I noticed that the Statue of Liberty totally photobombed me. If you head over to Alki Ave SW at 61st Ave SW, she might photobomb you, too.
South Park, 5th Ave S at S Holden St
37) This South Park mailbox looked very lonely to me. Maybe the area has more activity later in the day, but on this rainy morning the place was deserted. I put a bit of extra pep into my posing to help cheer up the mailbox, and you know what? I think it worked. Stop by 5th Ave S at S Holden Street and spread your own form of happiness.
SLU, Dexter Ave N at Thomas St
36) Hold onto your hats, because I’m getting real tricky for this self portrait with this fine South Lake Union box. Personally, I think the UPS box is being a bit rude by crowding the space like that, but perhaps I’m just a bit biased. Feel free to stop by Dexter Ave N at Thomas Street to form your own opinion.
