156) Bike series (5/15). There’s so much going on in this photo that I can barely contain myself. First of all, we’re on the very western edge of what can honestly be called Fremont, so it’s no wonder things are getting a bit wacky. But we have an abandoned shopping cart. We have a graffiti-covered mailbox. We have some doorstep-sitting youths, killing time outside an abandoned box-making company. And way off in the distance, we have the first rays of morning light casting a glow upon Ballard, signalling the start of another glorious day.

155) Bike series (4/15). I’m going to keep this one short, because… HOW DO I CHOOSE?!?

154) Bike series (3/15). Finally, I make it into the heart of Fremont, and not a moment too soon. Look at the condition of this double-wide box… it’s not surprising that it’s covered in graffiti, but what *is* surprising is that that graffiti is an utter mess. Shouldn’t we expect more from the self-proclaimed Center of the Universe? Shouldn’t they step up their graffiti game and show this box some love?

153) Bike series (2/15). Here we are outside Lighthouse Roasters. Over the years, I’ve heard about a dozen people mention “I saw Dave Mathews at Lighthouse Roasters the other day,” so I thought I’d keep an eye out for him. The thing is, I have absolutely no idea what the guy looks like, so this was a completely futile exercise.

152) Bike series (1/15) I was looking at my big map-o-mailboxes, and I realized there was a large string of uncaptured boxes forming an enticing loop through Fremont, Ballard, and Greenwood. At that point I knew what had to happen… another Bike Adventure! I rolled out at 5:30 a.m. and visited my first target shortly thereafter. See that guy along the right side of the picture? He was yelling for someone named Jeremy, so if that’s you, you might want to head over an see what he wants.

151) I’m not entirely sure why, but I really felt the need to keep an eye on this box. There’s just something about that graffiti, something about those radio antennas in the background, something about that stop sign… I just didn’t want to turn my back on this guy for even a second.
Northgate, in the freaking mall
150) For my 150th post, I’m pleased to present a very special mailbox. My data simply told me that the box was located inside Northgate Mall, in the service hallway next to Macy’s. Venturing into this spooky hallway, I really didn’t think I was going to find anything… maybe a mail slot in the wall, but certainly not a box. Holy smokes, was I ever wrong! Upon finding a full regulation mailbox right where it was promised to be, I decided to have a sit and really take in what this box has to offer. I learned that overall the box is quite happy, but sometimes it gets sick of the Cinnabon smell wafting through the corridors.

149) One thing I’ve learned over the course of this project is that mailboxes get really nervous when construction springs up around them. And for good reason — many Seattle mailboxes have vanished when blocks are torn up, never to reappear. This guy, however, seems to be holding his own, but I’m sure he’s sleeping with one eye open.

148) I came here to apologize to this box. You see, a couple weeks ago I did a world-famous bike series through the lower portion of the U District and I confidently thought I had picked up every last box in the area. A few days later, however, I realized I had missed the grandest box of them all, the one that stands guard outside the fortress-like post office building. So it was with the best intentions that I returned to the area to make my amends… but as I was about to do so, I got distracted by this sign.

147) It’s another Box of Opportunity! It’s another Box of Opportunity! I’m sure you can imagine how excited I get when I come across a yet-to-be-captured box during the course of my normal activities. Well, today I actually had to go to the post office to pick up some fancy-schmancy piece of mail that needed a signature, and I realized that I had not yet checked this box off of the big list. What a day. What a glorious day.
