116) This is one sneaky mailbox. Why, you ask? Because it did not appear on any of my so-called official lists of Seattle mailboxes and I would have totally missed it had I not caught a glimpse of it while cruising up Lake City Way one afternoon. Even now, you can see how shifty it is by the way it hides in the shadows. Nice try, box… but I got you.
Downtown, 2nd Ave at Pine St
115) While strolling through downtown, Carol and I decided to go into full tourist mode and whip out the selfie stick. You’ll notice how I expertly framed the background of this image to dramatically illustrate the battle between the old and the new in the ever-changing downtown landscape. Or maybe that was just an accident.
Columbia City, S Edmonds at Rainier Ave S
114) Fun fact! I was in a couple bands years and years ago, mostly playing Ramones and Pistols covers. I think it’s highly unlikely I’ll ever be in another band, but if that does happen, I’m now ready with the required posing-against-a-brink-wall promo shot. You can tell by his attitude that the mailbox is the egotistical lead singer.
Downtown, 2nd Ave at Lenora St
113) Let’s face it, Seattle is not exactly known for its mass transit. Things are slowly getting better, but right now we really lag behind what other cities have to offer. Whenever I can’t work the bus or light rail into my commute, I usually just end up hopping on the first available mailbox and riding it to my destination. It’s not the most comfortable way to travel, but you’ll get there eventually.
Capitol Hill, 19th Ave E at E Prospect St
112) If one had a devious mind, one might think that Melissa is about to stuff the little doggies into the mailbox and send them off on a grand adventure. I assure you, that did not happen. The dogs are safe and sound at home. Really. Back off, PETA.
Green Lake, Wallingford Ave N at N 82nd St
111) Bike Series 8/8. Our thrilling bike adventure comes to an end with a surprise finish! This box was not even on my list of ones to capture on this trip, but as luck would have it I came across it after I thought I was done for the day! Unfortunately, what this picture does not capture is the sound of the barking dog coming from behind that fence. He does not like anyone messing with his mailbox.
Northgate, College Way N at N 96th St
110) Bike Series 7/8. This proud collegiate mailbox serves the fine student body and faculty of North Seattle Community College. I imagine it used to be stuffed with letters to parents asking for money, but nowadays it’s probably empty most of the time since we all know that college students can’t afford stamps.
Oak Tree, Stone Ave N at N 96th St
109) Bike Series 6/8. To be honest, I’m not really sure if this location still qualifies as Oak Tree, but my maps don’t give me anything better to work with. Anyway, as you can see I decided to use this opportunity to take a short rest and just chill on the sidewalk with this fine mailbox. It seems to serve the tenants of the office building on the right, and since no one was there at the time, I thought I’d keep it company for a while.
Oak Tree, Aurora Ave N at N 100th St
108) Bike Series 5/8. My bike journey heads back over the fabled Aurora area known as Oak Tree to visit this box located next to the grocery store and the theater. I can’t come to this area without thinking of the glorious days when Larry’s Market held this space and movies cost a nickel and the snow was seven feet deep.
NW Hospital, N 115th St at Meridian Ave N
107) Bike Series 4/8. I can’t tell you how excited I was to find this mailbox. Well, that’s a lie. I certainly can tell you and I certainly will. My data told me this box existed, but because it’s on the NW Hospital campus, I wasn’t able to verify its existence using Google Streetview. I strongly suspected there was no box, but rather just a mail slot in the building lobby (booo!), but I had to check it out to be certain. And damn, look what I found!
