86) Did you know that there’s a local ordinance in Laurelhurst that requires everyone to carry a selfie stick with them at all times? It’s true. It also comes in very handy when you’re strolling through the neighborhood and you come upon a fine mailbox, like this one on NE 41st Street at 51th Ave NE. Those Laurelhurstians know what they’re doing.
Downtown, 5th Ave at Lenora St
85) What can I say about this downtown mailbox that almost certainly has not already been said? I’m sure many other people strolling along 5th Ave at Lenora Street have remarked about its proximity to the lovely brick facade and those summery planter boxes. I’m sure many others have also looked deep into the box and fallen victim to its enchanting ways. It’s best that I simply say nothing more.
Belltown, 2nd Ave, just south of Broad St
84) Check this out! While strolling through Belltown I found this great public exercising area! The equipment is set up perfectly to get in a quick set of box dips as you go about your downtown-ish business. You can find this urban gym on 2nd Ave, just south of Broad Street.
Downtown, 3rd Ave at Lenora St
83) You know how I excited I get when I find a regular mailbox, right? Then you can only imagine how over-the-top giddy I was to find a mailbox with an excavator in the background! What are the odds?! I have no idea how long this magical pairing with be there, so head downtown to 3rd Ave at Lenora Street before it’s too late!
Maple Leaf, 20th Ave NE at NE 77th St
82) Look at this photo of a fine Maple Leaf mailbox, it almost appears that I deliberately positioned a small action figure on the rock wall to the right of the box. I can assure you that I did no such thing, and in fact this is simply a consequence of the gritty gonzo urban photography style that I’m so well-known for. Really, if you go over to 20th Ave NE at NE 77th Street you will find no trace of this or any other action figure.
Ballard, Seaview Ave NW
81) If you like to sing jaunty sea shanties while tending to your mailing activities, then you can’t go wrong visiting this Ballard box on Seaview Ave NW. There are marinas all around, and a boat store right behind it that is undoubtedly filled with rum-soaked old salts. Aaaarrr.
West Seattle, California Ave SE at SW College St
80) Oh look, we’re back over to West Seattle to visit this box that is uniquely focused on the insurance industry. Just imagine how many policies have been mailed from here… gives you the shivers, doesn’t it? If you want to feel the shivers for yourself, you just have to go over to California Ave SE at SW College Street, but like the sign on the door says, No Pets.
University District, 17th Ave NE and NE 52nd St
79) One thing you should know about those green relay boxes is that they can be really cranky. This one was not at all happy to learn that my project focuses on blue boxes, so I literally had to hide from it when taking this photo in the University District. If you find yourself near 17th Ave NE and NE 52nd Street, try not to say anything that will upset it.
Downtown, 1st Ave at Pike St
78) Yeah, this mailbox is downtown, but I’m not sure I should tell you where it is. It’s already in a very crowded location and I’m not sure it wants any more attention… especially after dealing with thousands of tourists every day. No, please stay away from 1st Ave at Pike Street and give this poor box some rest.
Lake City, NE 120th St at 31st Ave NE
77) Check out this fantastic Lake City box. It’s a massive double-wide snorkel model, and it even has a dedicated pull-out area next to the road to make for easy mailing. Scenes like this tell me that the area has probably changed quite a bit in the decades since this box was installed. There must have once been a time when this degree of mailing capacity and convenience was warranted in this location, but now, it seems like a bit of overkill. If you would like to assess this for yourself, please head up to NE 120th Street at 31st Ave NE.
